Freya and the Crow

Fredrik Sonck & Jenny Lucander

One day, when big rain clouds sail over the sky, and the wind is tearing at the birches, Freya spots a crow. It’s sitting up in the fence by the seashore. It’s so big! The black eyes shimmering, the wind pulling at its feathers. Freya takes a hesitant step closer. It must be the crow mom, she thinks.

Mom and dad think Freya is too old to have her binky. Freja knows she is big, but not that big! When she trips and falls, she likes to have her binky. When her older sister yells that it’s only babies that have binkies, Freya gets angry. Then she really wants her binky. When Freya and her family are out walking, dad sees a crow’s nest. There is a baby crow inside the nest, cheeping and squeaking. It could probably use a binky – maybe it can have Freya’s?

Fredrik Sonck makes his debut with a tender story about the small child who discovers who she really is. Jenny Lucander’s sensitive illustrations depict idyllic summer days, but also a child’s anger and frustration regarding change and being required to be wise and strong. At the center is a problem familiar to many families with children: how do we get rid of the binky?
