We Are Birds is a curious and beautifully illustrated nonfiction book about the wonderful being that is the bird. Fascinating facts are interspersed with insights into the lives and peculiarities of different species. For example, you will learn all about the ingenious invention that bird eggs are, why birds are covered in thousands of feathers, and what the shape of their beaks reveals.

Through the book’s cinematic illustrations, a selection of bird species are brought to life in a unique and exciting way. Meet the tiny passerine titmouse, which usually lives in small family flocks and takes turns sitting in the middle, where it’s warmest, when the temperature drops in the evening. Or follow up close the nightingale’s feverish work of building its winter pantry in the fall. Like a diligent gardener, the colorful crow digs down acorns everywhere in the forest, and the forgotten hiding places sprout new oaks. In the final part of the book there are suggestions for fun activities for those who want to learn even more about birds.

Kristin Lidström is an illustrator and book designer educated at HDK in Gothenburg. She has been nominated for the August prize and awarded the Elsa Beskow plaque, the prize for “the best illustrated Swedish children’s book of the year”, as well as the Ottilia Adelborg prize and several awards from Svensk Bokkonst. For a few years now, she has been living in the countryside, near the village of Undenäs in Västergötland. The proximity to nature has awakened her great interest in birds. We Are Birds is Kristin Lidström’s debut as a writer.
