On his very first bike ride to school, Jan sets off across the city with a simple piece of advice from his parents: “Be careful!”

As Jan pedals onward, each spread introduces a new warning. At first, the obstacles appear ordinary: roadworks, pedestrians, busy streets. Yet with every turn of the page, the world becomes increasingly unpredictable and wonderfully absurd. Soon Jan must navigate demonstrators, a stampede of sheep, roller skaters, a giant snail, and even a dramatic cliff edge.

Children will delight in spotting clues, discovering details, and anticipating what unexpected obstacle might appear next.

Carl Johanson studied at S:t Martin’s School of Art in London, and took a Master’s in Graphic Design and Illustration in Stockholm. His 2015 debut, All Kinds of Cars, a collection of real and imagined road vehicles, was a huge success and has been sold to numerous languages. The companion volume, All Kinds of Planes, takes to the air in both real and imaginary flying machines and in a similarly invigorating style. Both books inform, entertain and inspire. Carl Johanson has also created two series of board books for very young children.
