The Pinchers and the Great Escape

Anders Sparring & Per Gustavsson

The Pincher Family love to steal things. It’s what they are born for! All except Theo, the son in the family.
Theo is good at most things. He can almost count to a thousand, knows several French words, and can operate the washing machine. But he can’t lie or steal.

“You must try harder,” says his mother sternly.

A mix of adventure, silliness, and everyday family life, and with bright and funny illustrations, this is a perfect chapter book for beginning and reluctant readers.

In The Pinchers and the Great Escape, it’s peak season for apple-picking. Despite Theo’s protests, the family makes their way into the garden of a private home. A police car comes racing up—Paul Eessman has been joined by two nearsighted officers. Everyone except Theo is thrown straight into jail. When Lydia Eessman, the police officer’s daughter, shows up at the candy store, everything turns around for Theo. Will they manage to outwit Lydia’s cop parents and free Theo’s family?

Anders Sparring is a screen writer and has written television scripts for many popular children’s shows. In addition to his writing (three books about Karla Wrestler), Anders also does stand-up comedy.

Per Gustavsson is an illustrator and author. He has illustrated a number of books, both his own and for others. His work has been praised internationally, and in Sweden he has been nominated for the August Prize several times.

Press voices

“You love the Pinchers family from the first page – especially the decent Ture, who always gets involved in crimes without meaning to. A very funny and exciting book – perfect for early readers, but also for reading aloud. With lots of colourful illustrations that add an extra dose of humour to the story.” NDR Mikado Redaktion

“A particularly enjoyable read-aloud or early reader book, illustrated in colour throughout.” Wetterauer Zeitung, Gießener Allgemeine, Alsfelder Allgemeine

“Ingenious, well-written and with absolutely wonderful illustrations. We enjoy stories where we both giggle and nod thoughtfully . . . . Criminally good!” Crimetime Award for Children’s Detective of the Year 2022

“The books about Family Pinchers are a clever mix of adventure, silly occurrences, family conflicts, and regular everyday life – and among the best children’s literature we have right now.” Dagens Nyheter
