My Friend Bandit

Oskar Kroon & David Henson

Bandit was my very first real friend. And then she just disappeared. ‌‌

You might think that birds are just birds. That all nuthatches are alike, just as all sparrowhawks are alike. That’s not the case. Birds are more like people, both alike and different at the same time.

Pumpkin knows that. Because on a cold winter’s day, the bird sits there on the windowsill, a tufted Nuthatch with a determined look and a black mask over her eyes. Like a little bandit.

Soon she comes flying every day when Pumpkin comes home from school, they become best friends. Until one day, when she just disappears…

My Friend Bandit is a story about friendship, imagination, and reality written by double August Prize winner Oskar Kroon and richly illustrated by David Henson.

Press voices

“Oskar Kroon writes straight to the heart about a child who prefers to withdraw from the hustle and bustle of school and who skips after‑school care to draw at home in the afternoons. David Henson’s deft drawing style brings life and movement to the finely tuned prose.” Dagens Nyheter

“With beautiful, subtle language, August Prize winner Oskar Kroon continues to give voice to what happens in silence. /…/ At the same time, David Henson’s expressive black‑and‑white illustrations enhance the narrative. My Friend Bandit is a lovely story to read aloud and perhaps to recognize yourself in.” BTJ

“A master at portraying the world of lonely or vulnerable children.” Jönköpings-Posten
