Ernest & Snow White
Luca Tortolini & Alice Barberini
I was born on a fi shing boat out in the Atlantic Ocean. After many days of fishing, the Captain put me in a box and separated me from my family.
This is the story of Snow White, the polydactyl cat that was adopted by Ernest Hemingway and that was, in all probability, the progenitor of many of the polydactyl cats that currently live in the Hemingway house-museum on the island of Key West.
Snow White was the only one who had the permission and the privilege to enter Ernest’s studio when he was working. There she could sleep quietly curled up beside him, lulled by the ticking of the typewriter keys. And, when Ernest was in the mood to talk, she was fascinated and compelled by the stories of his adventures.
When Ernest left for Europe, Snow White wouldn’t follow him so he thoughtfully continued to tell his tales in epistolary form, giving the housekeeper the task to read every letter aloud to Snow White. The cat never gave up the desire to one day find her little family and on Ernest’s return she received a wonderful surprise…
A beautiful story of love and affection as well as a first approach for young readers to the narrative world of Hemingway.
