String, the Bird and Me

Ellen Karlsson & Eva Lindström

It’s summer and Selma finally gets to be in the countryside with grandma and grandpa. There she doesn’t need to bother about not having a best friend in town. But the bird is pecking her and reminds her about it all the time. Selma gets to know a new friend called String, who is a bit eccentric and does whatever she wants. Selma doesn’t really know how to behave, not having had a friend before. She muddles along, coping with the insecurity of this new experience. And suddenly the bird doesn’t peck as much anymore…

A subtle chapter book with both depth and humor, illustrated by award winning Eva Lindström. This is the first book in the series about Selma.

“’Snöret, fågeln och jag’ is a brilliant granite gem, where the language glistens, and Lindström’s fastidious drawings capture Karlsson’s tone exactly and lifts it higher.” Lotta Olsson, Dagens Nyheter

“With a great psychological sense, Karlsson describes the varied emotional states that can fill a summer’s day to an eternity, especially when making a friend. A gem of a debut.” Expressen

“So beautifully told! Eva Lindström’s characteristic straggly illustrations in black and white complement aptly and well. What a debut by Ellen Karlsson!” BTJ

“The book’s strength lies within the well-captured dialogue, the child perspective, and the extra sensitivity in which the text and the established illustrator Eva Lindström’s consistently distinctive illustrations meet.” Pia Huss, Dagens Nyheter
